Would like to be able to access Vantage console via IP network. I have the IP data logger and cannot use WeatherTracker because it only supports a serial connection.

Dang! I knew this was coming. I'll look into how to connect to the IP module.

OK, I just ordered an WeatherLinkIP module.
I keep you informed of my progress.

Hopefully this will be in the next big update along with WMR200 support.

I second a vote for IP capability. I am connecting to my Davis via a wibox. I share the connection with several weather applications. Yours is my favorite -- but lost it when I went to the IP setup  Looking forward to using it again.

Thanks
JP

@jpangle1

Right now I have the code working internally to connect to the Davis WeatherLink IP module. (I even have it auto finding the module on the network do leaving the WeatherLink IP in DHCP mode works). I also auto detect the "Serial Connection Port" (default 22222 but settable using the WeatherLink IP web interface).

But, jpangle, are you using a WeatherLink IP or some other method of going from Serial to IP?

Hi Dean--

I have a Davis Vantage Pro II. I am using the Davis serial data logger and connect it into a Lantronix WiBox (http://www.lantronix.com/device-network ... wibox.html) to convert the serial connection to a IP address (and port). Using a Lantronix utility I have converted one of my com ports (on my windows PC) to look for the IP address and port on the WiBox. I connect to the WiBox using Virtual VP on my windows machine (http://www.softwx.com/weather/virtualvp.html). On the windows PC I fire up Virtual VP which makes the connection to the WiBox thus connecting to the Davis serial data logger. I can share the connection via either a com port or IP address (and port) that Virtual VP maintains. I use a variety of weather station programs. I can point these weather station programs to the any of the Virtual VP managed comport assignments or IP addresses -- the main programs I use are VPLive, Cumulus and Weather Display.

On my Mac I am using Weather-Display using an IP connection as it is the only Mac program that offers this for a Davis weather station. I point it to the IP/port setup that Virtual VP is maintaining on my windows PC-- but I can go direct to the WiBox IP address and port if I want to -- both work fine. Within Weather-Display I can input the IP address and port assignment.

I will happy to beta test anything you are doing if you want. I bought a license for WeatherTracker tonight. I was already using the beta version from August till December 2009. I converted to the IP setup in December and stopped using it.

I hope this helps and was not too much information.

JP

Not too much information, that was perfect.

My concern is the "sharing" part. Right now I would open a connection to the IP address and port and start my serial communications. I would not close the connection until you quit the program. Would this "interfere" with your sharing setup? Or, do you know would I have to connect, do my business then disconnect for some period of time then repeat the process?

Dean -- Staying connected should not be a problem. Right now I am running four weather programs (3 Windows and 1 Mac) that remain connected to VirtualVP. VirtualVP treats each one as it's own connection. On windy days I watch the wind speed and direction change simultaneously on all the weather programs. Pretty neat.

Dean -- do you want me to do some testing for you? Staying connected should work fine.

I will have some testing for you soon. I'm working on the code right now for an IP connection. Next beta will have it ready for testing. I'll post to this thread when ready.

Thanks.

OK, version 1.3.0 beta 1 is up...
http://www.afterten.com/downloads/weathertracker130b1.zip

Adds support for WeatherLink IP in DHCP and static mode. Also generic IP to Serial convertors. No docs yet just explore the communications settings.

This is really a beta as not all features are in there yet but this is enough to test and run your station on a regular basis if you can get it to connect.

Post any questions, probably need to start a new thread for any questions.

Hmmm -- I get a "An exception of class StackOverflowException was not handled. The application must shut down." error. Do I need to remove all traces of version 1.2 or can I just drag the 1.30b on top of the old version?

Thanks
JP

Name your old version WeatherTracker1.2 and the beta WeatherTracker1.3b1
You can only run one or the other at any one time.

How did you try to set up the new version in the communications settings.

Also the error you got, you should have been able to copy and paste into an email the entire error message. Please do that an email (not post here) the error.

Thanks.

This error happens on startup. I do not get a chance to go to the configuration screen. I typed the entire message into my other note -- it is between the quotes. I was not able to copy it to a clipboard. I renamed the 1.2 version to 1.2 and dropped the new version into the applications folder so I was not running both versions at the same time.

I renamed the beta version to 1.3b, then renamed the original (version 1.2) back to weathertracker and started it. It started fine. I deleted the station so it would force the station configuration screen on startup. I then renamed it to 1.2, then renamed the beta to wathertracker and tried to start it, but got the same error. The error shows up in a dialog screen with a button marked "OK" to hit and close the dialog.

I fired up the console when I tried to start weathertracker but nothing came up related to weathertracker. Sorry I can't be of more help.
